Classic Mint Julep Recipe: A Taste of the Kentucky Derby Tradition

Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, the first Saturday in May was more than just another day—it was the Kentucky Derby. The whole town shuts down on Friday and Saturday to celebrate this Kentucky tradition. From big hats to bold sips, no Derby celebration is complete without the iconic Mint Julep in hand.

Here’s how to craft the perfect Mint Julep, straight from my Kentucky roots to your glass.

Ingredients:

  • 8–10 fresh mint leaves, plus extra for garnish

  • 1/2 oz simple syrup (or 1 sugar cube)

  • 2 oz Kentucky bourbon

  • Crushed ice

  • Powdered sugar (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. In a julep cup or rocks glass, gently muddle the mint leaves with the simple syrup to release their oils. Don’t over-muddle—you want to bruise, not shred.

  2. Fill the glass halfway with crushed ice.

  3. Pour in the bourbon and stir until the glass begins to frost.

  4. Top with more crushed ice, creating a small dome on top.

  5. Garnish with a generous mint sprig and a dusting of powdered sugar (optional for flair).

  6. Serve with a short straw so every sip hits that fragrant mint.

Whether you're at Churchill Downs or watching from home, this Mint Julep will transport you straight to Derby Day in Louisville.

Note: If you want to make mint simple syrup for easier serving and batching. take 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water and drink it to a slow boil allowing the sugar to dissolve, remove from heat and throw in a few sprigs of mint and let steep for 30 minutes, strain and place in refrigerator to allow it to thicken.
